Here are some pictures along description how a day went at Hula Town Hilo 2010. Hope you find this helpful and decide to sign up for next year's Hula Town Hilo (again)! We also have a photo gallery of all the other days.
The first hula auana workshop by Kumu Hula Hulali Covington, one of the Beamer family traditions. Switching gear from hula kahiko, everyone was smiling and enjoying the gentle melody and each other's company.
Live Hawaiian Entertainment was provided during the lunch break at the lobby area, and the students had an opportunity to perform what they learned so far. Everyone enjoyed the high-level performance by the kumu hula as well as the nice warm breeze of Hilo town.
The second hula auana workshop by Kumu Hula Iwalani Kalima. She was taught by the late Uncle George Naope and she shared the knowledge of the beauty of Palehemo, which uncle loved.
The third hula auana workshop by also Kumu Hula Iwalani Kalima. This hapa haole song is a little faster, and the most upbeat mele of 3 that we covered.
At the end of the day, we had our closing ceremony/kanikapila at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. Everyone learned a lot, endured these intensive workshops, and met many new hula sisters and brothers. But hey, don't cry. Come back next year and we'll meet again.
