In ancient times, Hilo was famous for its rich coastal land and waterways which supported a thriving population of native Hawaiians. According to Hawaiian legend, Hilo is where the fire goddess Pele first witnessed a Hula performed for her by a god (Kaena) and a human (Hopoe).
